Isaac Del Toro defends his Tour de France podium
The seventh stage of the 2026 Tour de France unfolded on a course favoring sprinters, so the main contenders for the overall classification opted for a controlled day, avoiding unnecessary risks.
Isaac Del Toro once again rode a smart race, staying safely within the peloton and conserving energy for the mountain stages that will ultimately determine the outcome of the competition.
The day’s breakaway began almost from the start with another attempt by Frenchman Baptiste Beistroffer, who for the second time in just a few days launched a long-range escape.
This time, the Lotto rider wasn’t alone, as he found an adventure partner in Czech rider Jakub Otruba, both determined to challenge the peloton for much of the day.
The two escapees quickly built a significant gap while working together to take turns at the front and keep their chances of winning the stage alive.
The first intermediate sprint offered the first duel between the members of the breakaway, who pushed hard to distribute the available points before continuing their attack.
After a very close finish, Baptiste Beistroffer once again prevailed over his breakaway companion and claimed the maximum number of points available in that classification.
A few kilometers later came the only categorized climb of the stage, a short fourth-category ascent that once again pitted the two protagonists of the day against each other.
True to form, the Frenchman launched another attack in the final meters of the climb to also claim the maximum points for the mountains classification.
Despite the enormous effort expended for much of the race, the breakaway’s adventure began to lose steam as the peloton gradually increased its pace in pursuit.
The gap narrowed as the finish line approached until both riders were caught in the final kilometers, bringing an end to a breakaway that once again came close to a historic feat.
With the breakaway neutralized, the teams of the top sprinters organized their lead-out trains to prepare for a mass sprint at maximum speed.
In the decisive sprint, Tim Merlier unleashed a powerful acceleration that allowed him to outpace the other specialists and claim another victory in the 2016 Tour de France.
While the sprinters contested the stage, Isaac Del Toro remained well protected among the favorites, avoiding crashes, splits, or any incident that could jeopardize his position in the general classification.
The Mexican crossed the finish line in 57th place, as part of the main peloton, recording the exact same time as the stage winner.
That result allowed the UAE Team Emirates XRG rider to comfortably maintain his third place in the general classification, remaining among the top contenders for the race podium.
In addition to defending his overall position, Del Toro continues to wear the white jersey as leader of the young rider classification, a reward for the extraordinary level he has shown since the start of the Tour.
With the decisive stages drawing ever closer, the Mexican cyclist continues to manage his effort intelligently, aware that the biggest gaps are yet to come in the high mountains.
