Isaac Del Toro Challenges the Giants of the Tour de France
Stage 14 of the 2016 Tour de France delivered a true mountain biking masterclass, with a route designed to separate the best climbers from the rest of the peloton and create significant gaps between the contenders for the overall title.
The day’s ultimate test was the imposing Col du Haag, a first-category climb that awaited the favorites at the end of a stage considered one of the most demanding of this year’s edition.
As in previous stages, several riders attempted to form a breakaway from the opening kilometers, although this time the peloton never allowed them enough of an advantage for their attacks to succeed.
The teams of the main contenders maintained a very high pace from the start, preventing any group from opening up a gap that could compromise the race’s outcome.
The first significant point came just twelve kilometers in with the intermediate sprint, where Jasper Philipsen surprised Mads Pedersen to take the maximum bonus available.
After that section, the first major climb of the day began, a first-category ascent of more than twenty kilometers that quickly reduced the group to the riders with the best climbing ability.
Midway through the climb, Richard Carapaz launched an attack, accompanied by a large group of climbers looking to anticipate the move of the top favorites.
The offensive opened up a considerable gap over the main peloton, although the battle for the mountain points ultimately favored Frenchman Valentin Paret-Peintre, who clearly outsprinted the Ecuadorian.
History repeated itself on the following second-category climb, where Paret-Peintre once again demonstrated his superiority to take the maximum points.
When the race reached the third climb of the day, another first-category ascent, the Frenchman continued to dominate the mountains classification while his rivals began to pay the price for their accumulated fatigue.
Behind them, UAE Team Emirates XRG organized a flawless chase, gradually reducing a gap that for several kilometers exceeded three minutes.
The Emirati squad’s relentless work finally neutralized the breakaway on the early slopes of the Col du Haag, setting the stage for a battle between the general classification favorites.
Isaac Del Toro was expected to launch the decisive attack for Tadej Pogačar, as had happened on other mountain stages, but the stage unfolded in a completely different way.
It was the Slovenian champion himself who decided to accelerate with extraordinary force on the final ramps, a change of pace that only Jonas Vingegaard and Paul Seixas attempted to match.
The efforts of both riders proved insufficient against the power of Pogačar, who began to open up a gap with impressive ease, even conveying a clear sense of absolute control over the race with a smile on his face.
Isaac Del Toro momentarily lost contact with the main pursuers during this violent attack, but far from giving up, he began a spectacular comeback to rejoin Vingegaard and Seixas.
The Mexican’s recovery once again highlighted his extraordinary physical condition, demonstrating that he still had the strength to compete for the top positions despite the enormous effort he had put in throughout the day.
Meanwhile, Tadej Pogačar crossed the finish line completely alone to claim his fourth stage victory in the 2016 Tour de France and further strengthen his bid for the title.
The excitement continued behind the leader when Isaac Del Toro launched a powerful sprint in the final meters to contest second place in the stage against two of the strongest riders in the world.
The Mexican rider accelerated decisively, leaving Jonas Vingegaard with no chance to respond, while Paul Seixas tried but also failed to match the pace set by the UAE Team Emirates XRG rider.
Thanks to that extraordinary finish, Del Toro secured a brilliant second place, which also allowed him to regain a position in the general classification, returning to seventh place.
The Mexican cyclist’s achievement is even more remarkable considering that he first fulfilled his role as a domestique for Tadej Pogačar and then found the strength to fight for his own goals.
Rarely does a rider so effectively combine sacrifice for his leader with an individual performance capable of keeping him among the top ten in the most important race in professional cycling.
